Every car I've owned

Being a carbuyer is like being a kid in a sweet shop

1 My dad’s Skoda Favrit

A beautiful relationship, sadly cut short when my sister crashed it.

2 Fiat Uno

In two weeks the head gasket was gone, it used more oil than petrol and its range was 12 miles. Our relationship lasted only 13 days.

3 Ford Grenada 2.3GL

Its gear stick fell off in the middle lane of three in a one-way system in a busy London road. None of the motorists stopped to help push.

4 Austin Montego

From my friend Digger’s dad’s car lot. Bought it only to find out it too had a broken head gasket and had been involved heavily in a front and rear car accident. He swapped it for my first Ford.

5 Ford Sierra 1.6L

No power steering. No power.

6 Vauxhall Astra 1.8 SRI

After five cars in 3 years I finally bought one that worked. Got me back from Brighton to Peterborough in 1 hour 39 minutes so I could watch the 1998 World Cup quarter-final when David Beckham scored his first goal.

7&8 Ford Focus

One of the perks of my job at Ford was a brand new Focus every three months. Got into trouble when one of them needed a new pair of front tyres after 3,000 miles, but more trouble when my Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec Collection with 300 miles on it needed every panel replacing except the roof after I accidentally spun it into the barrier of the A1.

9 Ford Fiesta Van

My punishment for crashing the Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec Collection.

10 1989 Jaguar XJ6 2.9

I’d always wanted a Jag but when I realised I couldn’t afford the petrol, sold it after just six weeks.

11 1983 BMW 628 CSI

My first BMW. Hadn’t learned my lesson and still couldn’t afford the petrol, which is why I sold it after two months.

12-14 2002 Vauxhall Astra 1.8 SRI

A succession of company cars when I worked for Vauxhall, including the Astra, a Meriva and a Corsa 1.3 CDTI SXI. Managed not to crash any of them.

15 1988 Renault 25 2 litre Monaco

Brown with brown leather. The most comfortable seats I’ve ever sat in.

16 Volvo S40 1.8

What can you say? A bit dull, but it worked.

17 Audi A3 1.8T Sport

My first taste of contemporary German car quality. Had a great stereo.

18 Lotus Elise

Sold my house, spent the proceeds on this car. 10 days later it threw itself off a wet roundabout into a lamp post. Very twitchy car!

19 1983 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera

The most beautiful car I’ve ever owned. Six months and six grand later I’d run out of money to look after her and she had to go.

20 Subaru Impreza 2 litre Turbo Estate

A lot of fun and a good car, but I missed my Porsche too much to really appreciate it at the time. Did get me back from Padstow to Peterborough in four hours when I had food poisoning though.

21 The Redmobile

A 1993 Toyota Corolla 1.3GL Automatic Liftback. The un-killable car; two friends have owned it since I had it and it’s still running today. Passed its MOT two weeks ago with its original exhaust. What a machine!

22 BMW 528 SE Automatic

Blew up on the way to Brighton. Had to get a taxi halfway down the A23 to complete my journey.

23 The Goldmobile

Kia Clarus 2 litre GSX Automatic. Bought in an emergency to drive to Cornwall on holiday when the BMW 528 SE Automatic was unfortunately too broken to take us. Did a sterling job. Ugly though.

24 Honda Prelude 2.2 Vtec

Decent car, but a bit dull.

25 Subaru Impreza 2 litre Turbo AWD four door

Gold wheels, bit chavvy, went like the clappers.

26 1996 BMW 525

Brilliant old bus. Went to Devon and Cornwall many times in it until one of my friend’s mums made me sell it to her.

27 Alan

Also known as an Alfa Romeo 156. Only bought it because it was white. Looked stunning. We called him Alan!

28 Mondeo 1.8LX

It didn’t end well. It ended in a claim.

29 Ford Ka

It was gold, it was girly, but it drove me to Grantham and back every day.

30 Hyundai Lantra 1.6 LS Estate

You don’t see these very often. There’s a reason. Every time something broke I kicked the ‘kicking wing’. Both wings were substantially damaged.

31 Volkswagen Passat 1.9 TDI 130 Estate

Still going strong today, with 164,000 miles on it. Great work horse. Like driving one of your favourite armchairs.

32 2001 BMW 325TI Compact
